The matter record,
right where the bills are.
A request comes in from the business, Legal turns it into a matter, and the tasks, deadlines, documents, people and every invoice for that work sit on one page. Your files stay where they live today.
The matter record is on every plan. Tasks, key dates, documents, contacts and legal requests are in Professional and the 14-day free trial. New, and labelled beta in the app. See pricing.
Interactive demo
One request, from the business to a working matter
Six steps, about three minutes. The first is what someone in the business sees; the rest are what your legal team sees in CounselAudit. Type a title, accept the request, add a task or write a note, and the later steps pick it up. Example data for Meridian Logistics, a fictional shipper.
Someone in the business asks Legal
No account, no ticketing tool. The request form is a link you share with the business (or, if you turn it on, an email address). It carries your brand, asks who they are, what they need and how urgent it is, and takes up to five files.

Legal has it. You will get an email with a link to check where it stands. You do not need an account.
View the status of your requestLegal triages it
New requests show on the Matters page and in the bell for your legal team, with an email to whoever wants one. Accept it into a new matter (prefilled from the request), attach it to a matter you already have, or decline it with a note. Each request is decided once.

The matter record
Status, owner, the type of work and your own fields, at the top of the same page that already holds the budget, the spend and every invoice from the firms on it. Move it to On hold or Closed whenever you like; nothing is mandatory and every change is logged.

Tasks and key dates
A task needs only a title; give it an owner and a due date if you like. Key dates are hearings, filing deadlines, closings, renewals and limitation dates, with reminders to the owner before each one. Everything due this week shows on the dashboard, and each person can subscribe to their key dates from Google, Outlook or Apple Calendar.

A key date that passes without being marked done shows as Missed.
Documents and people
Documents are linked, not copied. The matter lists what CounselAudit already holds for it (invoices, the engagement letter, RFP proposals, estimates, review letters and the request's files), takes attachments up to 25 MB, and points to the folder where your team does the real work. The People tab lists your team on the matter and the outside contacts.
Attachments
Up to 25 MB per file. Work product stays where the work lives.

Activity, and an update to the business
Every change on the matter is written down as a plain sentence, including the ones you just made in this demo. Post a note for the team, and share it by email with the requester or the matter's contacts. The email carries the note and the matter name only: no amounts, no invoices, no review findings.

A record for every matter, on every plan
Matters were where the budget and the bills lived. Now they also hold what the matter is, who owns it and where it stands, so you can find any one of them from a single search box.
Find it, filter it, save the view
Search by name, file number, owner or firm. Filter by status, type, owner, firm or budget, sort any column, and save the view for yourself or the team.
Your own fields
Jurisdiction, risk rating, exposure, business unit: add the fields your team tracks (text, number, date, yes or no, or a pick list). They show on the list and in filters, exports and Ask AI. None are required.
Open, on hold, closed
Move a matter to any status at any time, with a reason if you want one. The closed date is kept, and the history is on the matter.
Activity and notes
One timeline of every change, written as sentences anyone can read. Pin the note that says where things stand.
Spend beside it
The budget, spend to date, open flags and every invoice from the matter's firms, on the same page. A matter's firms come from its bills, so there is nothing to keep in sync.
Ask AI and Claude
Ask which matters have a key date in the next 30 days and who owns them. With the MCP add-on, list, open, create and update matters, tasks and notes from Claude.
Link, do not copy
Your documents stay where they are
In-house teams already keep their work product in SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Drive, iManage, NetDocuments or a CLM. The matter points there, and lists the files CounselAudit already has for it, without making a second copy of anything.
- Where the work lives. Up to ten links per matter to the folders and records your team uses.
- On this matter. Invoice PDFs, engagement letters, RFP proposals, estimates and sent review letters, opened from where they are already stored.
- Attachments. For the odd file that has nowhere else to go, up to 25 MB each, in private storage.
What it is not
We would rather you knew up front. CounselAudit is the place for outside counsel spend and the matter record beside it. It is not trying to be a full enterprise legal management suite.
- removeNo legal holds
- removeNo contract lifecycle management
- removeNo document management system or folder sync
- removeNo vendor onboarding
If those matter most, keep the tool you have for them and link to it from the matter.
Questions about matters
Do business users need an account to send a legal request? expand_more
No. You share a link to your request form (and, if you turn it on, an email address). The requester gives their name, work email, what they need and how urgent it is, and can attach up to five files of 10 MB each. They get a confirmation with a link to check where the request stands, without an account.
What does the requester see after they ask? expand_more
A status page with the title, the date they submitted it, the date it was decided and whether it was accepted into a matter, attached to one, or declined, plus any note you chose to share. It never shows invoices, firms, amounts or review findings. Outcome emails are off until you turn them on.
Is this a document management system? expand_more
No. Documents are linked, not copied. A matter lists the files CounselAudit already holds for it (invoices, engagement letters, RFP proposals, estimates, review letters and request attachments), points to the folders where your team works in SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Drive, iManage, NetDocuments or a CLM, and takes the occasional attachment up to 25 MB.
Does it replace an enterprise legal management suite? expand_more
It covers the matter record most in-house teams need beside their outside counsel spend: status, owner, your own fields, tasks, key dates, documents, people, intake and an activity history. It does not do legal holds, contract lifecycle management or vendor onboarding. If you rely on those, keep that tool and link to it from the matter.
How do key date reminders work? expand_more
Each key date (hearing, filing deadline, closing, renewal, limitation or your own kind) can remind its owner the same day or 1, 3, 7, 14 or 30 days before, in the app and by email for people who opt in. Each person can also subscribe to their key dates from Google Calendar, Outlook or Apple Calendar with a private link they can reset.
Do I have to set up matters before invoices arrive? expand_more
No. Invoices still create or match their matter when they are uploaded or emailed in, and a matter's firms come from its invoices. Fields, tasks and everything else are optional; nothing in the workflow is mandatory.
Which plans include it? expand_more
The matter record (search, saved views, your own fields, status, activity and notes) is on every plan. Tasks, key dates, documents, contacts, legal requests and shared updates are part of the Professional plan and the 14-day free trial. The features are new and labelled beta in the app.
Can I work with matters from Claude? expand_more
Yes, with the MCP connector add-on. It can list, open, create and update matters, add notes, manage tasks and list legal requests, under the same permissions as the app. Ask AI in the app can also answer questions about tasks, key dates and requests.
Run the matter where you check the bills.
